Create new folder for each Backup?

Jul 8, 2015 at 6:01 AM
Hi,
first of all let me say THANK YOU for this terrific piece of work!
After installing VSTO it worked like a charm!
I do have a feature request though: two requests, actually.
1) Can you let it backup all the files in the "outlook data" folder? Or is this unnecessary? I always made a backup of all files in there just to be sure.
2) Can you let the backup create a new folder for each backup, with the date of the backup, f.e. "Outlook-Dateien 2014.12.06", depending on the day it was created? That would help a lot in sorting the backups!
Anyway, keep up the great work, and thank you!

Hello,
the ost and pst files contain all the data about emails, calendars and contacts.

Things which are not within the backup are:
  • E-Mail rules
  • Passwords
  • Account settings
These data is stored in the registry and thus wont be backed up.
If you need to backup this data, you must export the corresponding registry keys. Passwords are encrypted
and can't be transferred to other computers (except you have an image of your current system).
For generating a folder for each backup you can use the "post-backup command" feature.
You can create a folder and move all files to this newly created folder.
Examples are listed here: https://outlookbackupaddin.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Script%20collection
If you dont get along with the samples, just drop a line.

Kind regards,
Thomas

Hi,
and thank you for your quick answer!
I see the post-backup cmd in the settings, but how do I insert the script? Just copy and paste the text?
Thank you,
Max

Edit: Nevermind, I found that just inserting the path to the .bat is enough.
Now with one PC I've got the problem that the Backup-window won't close, text is the following:

Starting backup...please wait...
Found outlook with PID 7052
Waiting for OUTLOOK...
copy C:\Users*
\Outlook.pst to Y:\Backup**
Der Wert 1677607069 ist für Value ungültig. Value sollte zwischen 'minimum' und 'maximum' liegen.
Parametername: Value
Starting post-backup cmd: C:\Program Files (x86)\CodePlex\outlookbackupaddin\append_date.bat

Any idea? The file itself backups just fine, just the window won't close.

Hello,
yes.. you merely have to enter the path to the batch file. Thats it.

The window stays open, when any exception occurs.
Somehow the progress bar didn't work in your case.
May I ask how big your pst file is?
Did you activate compression?
If you send me a contact email I could send you a debug version to narrow down the issue.
Somehow the file sizes got messed up.

Thanks!

Well the progress bar filled up all right, just the window does stays open. The pst is 2.6GB. On my other PC it is 3.8, and the backup worked fine.
Which compression do you mean? Not sure about that.
My email is xamoel@hotmail.de Thanks so much for your help!

Update to this topic:
The progress bar didnt work when there was an alternate data stream within the pst-file.
This can happen, e.g. when pst-file was downloaded from a website or from a non-trusted server.
Version 1.5.1 fixes this problem.
